Error Rates and Tight Bounds for L Diversity Reception of MQAM and MPSK Signals in Rayleigh Fading

New exact expressions are derived for the symbol error rate (SER) of M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) and the bit error rate (BER) of M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) for L diversity reception in Rayleigh fading channels corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The diversity techniques considered here are maximum ratio combining (MRC) and selection combining (SC). MRC with identical channels and dissimilar channels is considered. Our new results overcome the limitations of earlier works, which either dealt with only two, instead of L, branch MRC space diversity or the derived error rate expression involved an infinite series rather than a closed form. We obtain some new tight bounds for the error rates and compare with their exact results.
